The holy Gaon Rabbi Pinchas HaLevi Horowitz (1731–1805), Av Beit Din of Frankfurt, author of Hafla’ah, was among the prominent disciples of the Maggid of Mezeritch. In his early years he served in the rabbinate in the cities of Witkowo and Lachowicze. On the 26th of Tevet, 1772, he was appointed as Av Beit Din and Rosh Yeshiva of Frankfurt, which at the time was the great Torah center in Germany. He served in this position for over thirty-three years until his passing. His yeshiva produced many students, the most famous of whom was his primary disciple, the holy Chasam Sofer. He was one of the chief opponents of the Haskalah and Reform movements. The Hafla’ah and his Torah teachings were revered by all the great sages of his generation, both from the Hasidic and non-Hasidic camps. The Hafla’ah was a great Torah scholar who wrote Chiddushim on all parts of the Torah and most of the Talmudic tractates. He gave his works the general title Hafla’ah. The first volume in this series was Ketubah on Tractate Ketubot, the second was HaMikneh on Tractate Kiddushin. These two were printed in his lifetime. The third, Panim Yafot on the Torah, was printed posthumously in five volumes. His responsa were published in She'elot u-Teshuvot Givat Pinchas. On the title page is an erased ownership inscription, and beneath it a signature: ”...the s. Moshe Levi of Erzich...” [4], 94, [4] leaves. 32 cm. Fair condition.
