“For they are, unfortunately, in a difficult situation, and their yeshiva is outstanding among the Yeshivos Ketanos in the number of its students” — a letter from the Gaon Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman - A letter from the holy Gaon Rabbi Elchanan Bunim Wasserman, to the administration of “Vaad HaYeshivos” in Vilna – an urgent request for assistance – Iyar 5697 [May 1937] The first part of the letter is from Rabbi Yisrael Garski HY”D, one of the directors of the “Ohel Torah” Yeshiva in Baranovich, who writes: “Our physical situation is very dire, even worse than before, we literally have nothing, in addition to the high costs... I request precision and monthly sending [of funds], because we have no other money...” At the end of the letter, the Rosh Yeshiva, the Gaon Rabbi Elchanan, added three lines in his own handwriting and signed: “I also ask to fulfill the above request as much as possible, for they are, unfortunately, in a difficult situation, and their yeshiva is outstanding among the Yeshivos Ketanos in the number of its students.” The Gaon Rabbi Elchanan Bunim Wasserman (1876–1941) was a disciple of Rabbi Eliezer Gordon and Rabbi Shimon Shkop in the Telz Yeshiva, and of the Chofetz Chaim in the Kollel for the study of Kodashim in Radin. He was known as an exceptional genius and gained fame throughout the Torah world. In 1903 he served as a Rosh Mesivta in Amtchislav. In 1910 he served in Brisk. During World War I, he was asked by the Chofetz Chaim to maintain the yeshiva in Smilovichi. In 1921 he founded the “Ohel Torah” Yeshiva in Baranovich and was active in many communal matters. During the Holocaust, he was exiled to the Kovno Ghetto and was murdered on Kiddush Hashem on the 11th of Tammuz 5701. [1] leaf. Good condition. Filing holes. Fold mark.
