Maran Posek HaDor Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv [1910–2012] was born in Lithuania, an only child after 17 years of his parents’ marriage. In 1924, he immigrated with his family to the Land of Israel and lived all his life in the Mea Shearim neighborhood. He served as a Dayan on the Chief Rabbinical Court. Renowned for his exceptional diligence from his youth without interruption, halachic questions were addressed to him daily from all over the world. In time, he became the foremost halachic authority of the generation and one of the greatest leaders of Orthodox Jewry.
