Toledot Yitzchak, important edition, Amsterdam 1708 – bound with: Lechem Dima, Amsterdam 1710. - Sefer Toledot Yitzchak, discourses on the Torah, by Rabbi Yitzchak Karo—uncle of Maran the Beit Yosef—Amsterdam, 1708, bound with: Sefer Lechem Dima, commentary on Megillat Eicha, by Rabbi Shmuel di Uzeda [author of ”Midrash Shmuel” on Pirkei Avot, disciple of the Ari], Amsterdam, 1710. On the title page of the edition before us, it is mistakenly printed that the author was “the grandfather of the sage... Rabbi Yosef Karo ztz”l.” But this is incorrect. The author was the uncle of the Beit Yosef. Rabbi Ephraim Karo, the Beit Yosef’s father, was the brother of the author, and after Rabbi Ephraim’s passing, the Beit Yosef was raised by his uncle, Rabbi Yitzchak, when he was living in Istanbul. Maran the Beit Yosef mentions his uncle in one of his responsa: “These responsa I found from my uncle, the esteemed rabbi, Rabbi Yitzchak Karo z”l, and I copied them here among my responsa.” He also cites him in his major work Beit Yosef, siman 31: “So too wrote my teacher and uncle, Rabbi Yitzchak Karo z”l, in a responsum.” At the beginning and end of the volume appears the stamp: “Beit Midrash PUM of the honorable Rabbi Yechiel Waller ztz”l” [the historic kloiz in Altona-Hamburg]. Rabbi Yechiel Waller was among the beloved students of Rabbi Yonatan Eybeschutz, and one of the leaders of Hamburg. In Hamburg he established a Beit Midrash in which the voice of Torah never ceased, and he himself was among the regular learners there. He passed away on Erev Pesach, 1789, after immersing in the mikvah to purify for the Holiday. Toledot Yitzchak: [2], 136 leaves. Lechem Dima: [1], 65 leaves. 21 cm. Good condition. Stains.
