Letter from the Holy Rabbi Yisroel Shalom Yosef of Matanya - A Letter Entirely in the Holy Handwriting and Signature of the Holy Rabbi Yisroel Yosef Hager of Matanya, Addressed to His Friend Rabbi Yosef of Tzfas, Regarding the Sending of Charity Funds to the Holy City of Tzfas. 1937 The letter revolves around the subject of sending and supporting from Czernowitz—a transfer which was not carried out due to restrictions imposed in Romania. The Rebbe expresses his great sorrow over this: “For I knew how much they yearn for this support […].” The Rebbe continues describing his efforts to arrange the transfer: “And all this costs a great deal. And we need the help of Hashem that it should reach them.” He describes his efforts to obtain permits to reach Czernowitz and to find, with the help of Hashem, a safe path for the transmission. The letter concludes with a heartfelt prayer: “May Hashem have mercy on the remnant of His people Israel, for the strength to bear it has failed. His friend, awaiting the salvation of Hashem speedily.” The Holy Rabbi Yisrael Shalom Yosef, author of Nefesh Yishai of Matanya (1884–1944), son and successor of the Holy Rabbi Chaim of Matanya. He was murdered in the Holocaust on the 19th of Iyar 1944, together with his Rebbetzin, Rebbetzin Devorah Leah (daughter of Rabbi Yechiel Horowitz of Pakshivanitz), and their three children. Only a few documents of his Torah teachings and letters have remained, most in the handwriting of his gabbai or with his signature. Before us is a rare long letter, entirely in his holy handwriting. The illustrious Matanya chassidus was almost completely destroyed in the Holocaust. Many years later, Rabbi Moshe of Matanya, a descendant of this saintly dynasty, reestablished the court in Bnei Brak. [1] Leaf, paper. In the holy handwriting and with the signature of Rabbi Yisrael Yosef Hager. Folding mark, a stain not affecting the text. Very good condition.
