On the title page: ownership inscriptions and signatures of Rabbi “David Luria, son of the honorable Rabbi Aryeh Leib… of Bychaŭ.” Numerous additional notes on the rear endpaper. At the top edge of the title page: the signature “Chaim Berlin of Volozhin, ” partially torn and damaged. The RD”L – Rabbi David Luria (1798–1855) was among the crown jewels of Lithuanian Torah scholars, in whom Torah and greatness were united. One of the greatest transmitters of the traditions of the Vilna Gaon and his Beit Midrash, and among the foremost analysts of the Gaon’s teachings. A towering genius, nothing was hidden from him—an extraordinary expert in both Talmuds, all Midrashim, the Zohar, and Kusvei Ari. Best known for his glosses on the Talmud Bavli (printed in the Vilna Shas), his extensive notes on the Midrashim, and especially his famed work on Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer, whose introductory chapters reflect his astonishing mastery across the entire breadth of Torah. Despite his deep attachment to the teachings of the Vilna Gaon, the RD”L maintained close friendships with leading Chassidic figures, especially the Tzemach Tzedek and the Chidushei HaRim. In his introduction to Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer he writes: “I was honored with the precious signature of the holy hand of the Admor, Rabbi Menachem Mendel, shlit”a of the community of Lubavitch, and of the honored Gaon and Chassid, Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Alter, of the city of Warsaw…” (See also Tzemach Tzedek – Mafteichot L'Rashdab Levin, p. 162, on the mutual admiration between the Tzemach Tzedek and the RD”L.)
