The great Gaon Rabbi Chaim Leib Shmuelevitz (1903–1979) – among the greatest Roshei Yeshiva of the previous generation. Served for many years as Rosh Yeshiva of the Mir Yeshiva. In his youth he studied Torah at the Shaar HaTorah Yeshiva in Grodno under the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Shkop, who held him in high esteem and even appointed him to teach in the youth division of the Yeshiva. Known for his tremendous diligence, deep reasoning, and exceptional memory. Already in his youth, his learning was characterized by deep study with several Chavrutot that rotated periodically, while he remained immersed in the sweetness of the Sugyot. Upon reaching marriageable age, he married the daughter of the Gaon Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel. Rabbi Chaim fled with the students of the Mir Yeshiva during the war throughout all their places of wandering. In the Holy Land, he was among the greats of the generation.
