Letter from the Gaon Rabbi Leib Chasman regarding Vaad HaYeshivot. Shchuchyn, 1925. - Postcard from Rabbi Yehuda Leib Chasman to Rabbi Yosef Shub, right-hand of Maran Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski of Vilna, regarding the Vaad HaYeshivot in Lithuania and the charity funds. Shchuchyn, 1925 [1924]. ”It would be good to inform me of the current state of matters, and the outcomes regarding the honor of Torah in Bialystok.” A letter (written on a postcard) in the handwriting and with the signature of the Gaon of Mussar Rabbi Yehuda Leib Chasman ztz”l, author of Or Yahel, Rosh Yeshiva in Shchuchyn and the spiritual director of the Telz and Chevron yeshivot. One of the leaders of the Mussar movement. [1] Official postcard, on one side printed with the rabbi’s name in Latin characters, and on the other: “Central Committee for Yeshivot Ketanot in Poland.” With the stamp of the Central Office of the Vaad HaYeshivot in Vilna confirming receipt of the postcard. In the handwriting of Rabbi Yehuda Leib Chasman, who signs his name with initials: “יהל”. In his letter, Harav Chasman requests to be updated on the sums of money collected for the benefit of the yeshivot in Bialystok and in the provincial towns, on the activities being carried out in the Volhynia region, on plans for the rabbis’ winter travels for the cause, and on the decision regarding the charity boxes. The rabbi raises the possibility of convening the executive committee of the Vaad HaYeshivot and distributing Rabbi Shamshon Raphael Hirsch’s Igrot Tzafon in serialized editions. The great figure of Mussar, Maran the mashgiach Rabbi Yehuda Leib Chasman (1869–1936) – spiritual director of the Telz and Chevron yeshivot and one of the foremost figures of Mussar in his generation. He studied under the Geonim Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer and the Alter of Slabodka, Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel. He also studied for about a year in the Talmud Torah of Kelm under the Alter Rabbi Simcha Zissel. After his marriage, he spent about a year at the Volozhin Yeshiva. He served in the rabbinate of Shchuchyn and at the Telz Yeshiva. He immigrated to Eretz Yisrael and served as the spiritual director of the Chevron Yeshiva. His teachings were compiled in the sefer Or Yahel. Rabbi Yosef Shub HY”D (1897–1942) – disciple of the Alter of Slabodka. Director of the central bureau of the Vaad HaYeshivot, editor of the Orthodox newspaper Dus Vort in Vilna, and a trusted associate of the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer. Son-in-law of the Gaon Rabbi Eliezer Rabinowitz, Av Beit Din of Minsk. He visited Eretz Yisrael and considered immigrating. During the Holocaust, he was imprisoned by the Germans in the Lukishki prison, brutally tortured, and murdered in Ponary. Filing holes, wear at the place where the stamp was removed. Good condition.
