Letter of recommendation in the handwriting of the holy Gaon Rabbi Asher Anschel Katz, Av Beit Din of Serdahely – written for his student, the Bochur Ze’ev Rubinstein of Shurany – Serdahely, Shevat 1939. The holy Gaon Rabbi Asher Anschel Katz, Av Beit Din of Serdahely , one of the great leaders of Hungarian Jewry [1881–1944]. Born in Tchenger to the Ha'Gaon Ha'Tzaddik Rabbi Yonatan Binyamin. In his youth, he studied Torah from the author of Arogot HaBosem. At a young age, he married into the family of the holy Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich of Shamloy. At first, he served as rabbi and teacher in Shamloy, until he was appointed rabbi of the holy community of Serdahely, where he led the congregation with strength until the Nazi destruction descended upon Hungary. He headed a great yeshiva that numbered thousands of outstanding Torah scholars, among the largest in Hungary. Rabbi Asher Anschel was taken together with his community to Auschwitz. Among his surviving descendants after the Holocaust are the Gaavad of Vienna and the Gaavad of Serdahely in New York. [1] Leaf. 18 cm. Good condition. Filing holes.
