Manuscript of the Illustrious Gaon Rabbi Yosef Engel, Author of Otzros Yosef – A Leaf from His Great Work Otzros Yosef – Two Large Pages Before us are two large pages in the handwriting of the illustrious and renowned Gaon Rabbi Yosef Engel, from his great work Otzros Yosef (Warsaw 1929), in novellae on Yoreh De’ah, from page 21 onward. [1] leaf (2 written pages). 33 cm. Good condition. Minor edge tears, without damage to the text. The Gaon of Gaonim Rabbi Yosef Engel (1859–1920), Mara DeKulah Talmuda, proficient and sharp in all areas of Torah, revealed and hidden. All his days he was like a flowing spring and a river that does not cease, innovating with Divine grace in all parts of Torah from his youth until the end of his days. During his lifetime he authored one hundred and twenty works in all areas of Torah. The most renowned among them, which brought him world acclaim, are: Lekach Tov, Beis HaOtzar, Osiyos D’Oraysa, Gilyonei HaShas, Otzros Yosef, Shiv’im Panim LaTorah, Gevuros Shmonim, and others. Regarding his rare and refined proficiency, Rabbi Shimon Yosef Zevin wrote that it is “unmatched among Torah giants and uncommon in sefarim.” In 1905 he was appointed as Av Beis Din of Kraków until the outbreak of World War I, and toward the beginning of 1915 he relocated to Vienna, where he lived until his passing on Rosh Chodesh Mar-Cheshvan 1920.
