Receipt for Tzedakah in the Holy Handwriting of the Chida – “Shlama China v’Chasda” Throughout his life, the Chida was active on behalf of the poor of Eretz Yisrael, both during his journeys as a Shadar (emissary) and later during his residence in Livorno. Presented here is a receipt on a small surviving slip of paper in his holy handwriting, confirming a sum he received for charity. He writes: שלמא חינא וחסדא למר ניהו רבא, זה יכתוב י[ד]ו יד הקדש שמהכולל והיחידים עלה סך ארבע מאות ושמונה ועשרים דוקאטי קוריינטי, מלבד איזה נדיב שימסור לשליח בעת נסיעתו לש'[ם] וש'[לום] רב למעכת”ר Rabbeinu HaGadol Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai, the Chida (1724–1806) – one of the great Geonim of Israel, prolific author, saintly and revered. His name became renowned in all places he traveled and wherever his word reached. Among the Tzaddikim it is well known that the study of his sefarim is a great segulah for uplifting the heart, inspiring Yiras Shamayim, and Kirvas Elokim. [1] Leaf. 10 cm. Good to fair condition.
