Sefer Pri Toar Printed by the Holy Ohr HaChaim in His Last Year of Life – Magnificent Exampler – Ancient Signatures! Sefer Perot Ginosar on Yoreh De’ah: Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De’ah with the Commentaries Pri Chadash by Rabbi Chizkiyah De Silva and Pri Toar by Rabbeinu Chaim ben Attar – With an Ancient Gloss in Sephardic Script The author of the Pri Chadash printed his Sefer on Yoreh De’ah in Amsterdam in 1692 during his lifetime. After its publication, the Sefer aroused great opposition, since the author did not refrain from sharply disagreeing with the Beit Yosef and other great Rishonim. As a result, the Rabbis of Egypt banned the study of the Sefer: “that no man shall read this Sefer, neither occasional reading nor regular study” (Ginat Veradim, Yoreh De’ah, Klal 3, Siman 3). In 1742 Rabbeinu Chaim ben Attar, the Holy Ohr HaChaim, printed his Sefer Perot Ginosar on Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De’ah. In the center of the page were printed the words of the Mechaber and the Rema, with the Pri Chadash on one side and the Pri Toar on the other. Much of the Pri Toar is dedicated to resolving the questions and attacks of the Pri Chadash on the Shulchan Aruch. The Sefer before us was sent to be printed in Amsterdam at the end of 1740 (or at the beginning of 1741) by our holy author zy”a, when he was already on his way to Eretz HaKodesh. The Chida, disciple of the Ohr HaChaim, testifies in his Shem HaGedolim that in his youth he accompanied his teacher, the Or HaChaim, several times to pray at the graves of the righteous on Har HaZeitim: “And when we came to the monument of the Rabbi Pri Chadash we saw the aforementioned Rabbi [the Or HaChaim] remain alone by his grave for about a quarter of an hour, and his lips were murmuring, and we understood that he was asking forgiveness and saying that his intention had been for the sake of Heaven, and the like.” On leaf 231/2 there is an ancient gloss in Sephardic script on the words of the Pri Chadash, and the writer directs the reader to a booklet he wrote on the matter.
