HaGaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Naftali Rubin (1861–1938/9) was the son of  HaGaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Shmuel of Kartschin, of the Ropshitz lineage, and son-in-law of the Holy Gaon Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga Halberstam, author of Divrei Yechezkel of Shinova. He lived in the home of his father-in-law for about fifteen years, dedicating himself to Torah and Avodah with great and extraordinary diligence, until his father-in-law forbade him from using his house by candlelight between 10 PM and 4 AM. Yet this did not help, for he would go to study in the Beit Midrash, and hardly slept in his home due to his great devotion. His great father-in-law admired and honored him greatly, and said of him that he knew the four sections of the Shulchan Aruch with its commentaries, straight and reversed. In 1889 he was appointed Av Beit Din of Kalwaria, near Krakow. Around 1895 (or 1899), he became the Rabbi of Vishnitsa. His great father-in-law participated in the event of his appointment, and blessed the city that by appointing such a Rabbi, its fortune and honor would be uplifted — and indeed from then on hundreds of families of G-d-fearing and wholesome Jews joined the community of Vishnitsa. His relative, the Holy Rabbi Chana of Kalshitz HY”D, would travel to spend Shabbat with him, saying: “A Jew who ate for fifteen years on Shabbat and Moadim at the table of my holy grandfather of Shinova — it is worthwhile to spend Shabbat with him.” Good condition.
