The holy Gaon Rabbi Yosef Ergas (1685–1730) was among the great Kabbalists and Rabbis of Italy and a leading opponent of the Sabbatean movement. He was a disciple of Rabbi Shmuel di Pas in Livorno and Rabbi Binyamin HaKohen Vitali. He served as Rosh Yeshiva in Pisa and was the teacher of the Yad Malachi. He became especially renowned when he expelled Nechemia Chayon from Livorno and authored polemical works against him. He is the author of Shu”t Divrei Yosef and Shomer Emunim, considered a foundational sefer in the study of Kabbalah. [Until about two years ago, this edition was considered unique.
