From the archives of the renowned Gaon Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Heller Ḥarif, author of Tiv Gittin Sefer HaMachria by Rabbeinu Yeshaya the Elder di Trani (author of Tosafot Rid) – Livorno, 1779 – First Edition – with the handwritten signatures of the Gaon Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Heller, author of Tiv Gittin – including a gloss signed in his handwriting. At the beginning of the Sefer is printed the approbation of the Chida. Signatures on the title page: ”הק' צבי הירש העליר מ[...] יצ”ו”; ”הק' צ”ה העלי[ר] מזאמושטאץ כעת חופ”ק אונגוואהר” Ownership inscription on the title page:  ”שייך לאמ”ו הרב הגאון הגדול [...] ובקי פ”ה ע”ה כקש”ת מו”ה צבי הירש” On leaf D/1 there is a short gloss in the handwriting of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Ḥarif, signed at its conclusion: ”צבי הירש העליר” The holy Gaon Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Heller, known as Reb Hershel Ḥarif (1776–1834), author of Tiv Gittin, was among the great Torah leaders of the generation of Rabbi Akiva Eiger and the Chasam Sofer (who, as is known, in his third marriage wed Rabbi Zvi Hirsch’s widow). He was born in Zamosht, Poland. In his youth, he sat in Rava and learned Torah in partnership with the holy Rabbi Shalom of Kamenka. Word of his sharpness reached the Gaon, author of Baruch Ta’am, through whose influence Rabbi Zvi Hirsch was accepted as Av Beit Din in Briegel, Galicia. From there, he was called to serve as Rosh Yeshiva in Brody. Among his disciples were some of the great luminaries of the generation: Rabbi Moshe Tuvish (author of Toafot and Karnei Re’em), Rabbi Menachem Zvi of Shklov (author of She’elot uTeshuvot Ramatz), and Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried, author of Kitzur Shulchan Aruch. He later served as Av Beit Din and Rosh Yeshiva in the communities of Ungvar and Bonyhád. In his final years, he was appointed rabbi of Óbuda (Old Buda), but served less than a year until his sudden passing on 25 Tishrei 1834, before reaching sixty years of age. He was buried in the old cemetery of Óbuda, and years later, his grave was transferred to the cemetery in Budapest. He left behind numerous manuscripts of novellae on the Talmud, Tur, and Shu”t, most of which were destroyed in a fire. Among his published works are: Tiv Gittin on Tractate Gittin, Tapuchei Zahav (sermons), responsa – part Yoreh De’ah, responsa – parts Orach Chaim and Even HaEzer, and Kuntres HaGaon R. Zvi Ḥarif (part I, on the sugya of “Shikul HaDa’at, ” and part II, novellae on the Talmud). [4], 80 leaves. 18 cm. Good–fair condition. Water stains. Wear. Defective old binding.
