Letter in Italian, Signed by Rabbi Rafael Yeshaya Azulai, Son of Rabbeinu the Chida. Florence, 1813 Letter of blessing to the leaders of the Ancona community in Italy, signed: “Thus are the words of one faithful in their love always, the young Rafael Yeshaya Azulai, may he be protected.” [1] folded leaf. On the back of the letter – the sender’s and recipients’ addresses. Italian with several words in Hebrew. At the margin of the letter are two lines in the handwriting of Rabbi Rafael Yeshaya Azulai, together with his signature. The Gaon Rabbi Rafael Yeshaya Azulai (1740–1826) – firstborn son and disciple of Rabbeinu the Chida. Born in Jerusalem, he became known as one of its sages. He merited great esteem and affection from his father, who mentioned him in his writings. In 1780, he traveled abroad as a fundraising emissary on behalf of the Tiberias community, and after completing his mission, he settled in Amsterdam. From 1788 until his passing, he served as Rabbi of the Ancona community in Italy, maintaining regular correspondence with his father, who lived in Livorno. Part of his Sefer She’elot U’Teshuvot Imrei Noam was printed in the Sefer of his son, Zikaron Moshe. Fold marks, time stains. Very good condition.
