Letter in the Holy Handwriting of the Holy Admor Rabbi David Morgenstern of Kotzk – Written During the Lifetime of His Father The “Seraph” of Kotzk – On Collecting Ma’amadot for His Holy Father’s Household: “To Collect the Debts from Ana”sh for the Household of My Honored Father...” – Kotzk, Tammuz 1855 The letter before us was sent to Rabbi Yaakel Av Beit Din of Kalshin. In his letter the Holy Rabbi David writes: “I hereby notify that it was agreed among us that my friend will also travel this year to the places he traveled last year to collect the debts from Ana”sh for the household of my honored father, may he live long in good life… Let him hurry and hasten his actions, so that at least the journey will be before the seventeenth of this month [Tammuz]…” The Holy Admor Rabbi David Morgenstern of Kotzk (1809–1873), eldest son of the Holy “Seraph” of Kotzk. All the years of his father’s residence in Kotzk he did not move from his side. After the passing of his father in 1859 most of the Chassidim followed the “Chiddushei HaRim” of Gur, however a significant part of the Chassidim inclined after Rabbi David, who was a faithful expression of the teachings of his father, the “Seraph” of Kotzk. His sayings were sharp and brief, penetrating the depth of the soul and bringing the listener to self-demand to reach the level of perfection through deep awareness (Encyclopedia of Chassidut, I, p. 474). On the back of the letter a stamp: “Yechiel Meir ben Harav Hakadosh Admor Shlit”a of Praga” – the Admor of Lomaz (1894–1974), son of the Admor Rabbi Zvi Hirsch of Lomaz, son of Rabbi David of Kotzk. Folded leaf. 21 cm. Good–Fair condition. Small tears in the body of the letter, with slight damage to the text. Large tear on the second page, with paper restoration. Stains. Fold marks. Remnants of red wax seal.
