Sefer Yad Aharon on Tur Orach Chaim, by Rabbi Aharon Alfandari. Printed by the partners Yonah Ashkenazi and David Chazan, Izmir, 1735. First edition. Distinguished copy. [1], 168; 34 leaves. At the end: sugyot and texts of Rashi and Tosafot, texts of Rashi, Ramban, Ra’em, and rules of the Gemara and Poskim. On the title page are ownership inscriptions and the signature of Rabbi Shalom Chutzin; on the following page appears the stamp of Rabbi “Shalom Moshe Chai Gagin, Jerusalem.” On one leaf are glosses signed by Rabbi Yitzchak HaKohen Shaki. Another gloss in manuscript on leaf 164. The Gaon, author Rabbi Aharon Ben Reb Moshe Alfandari (ca. 1701–1774), was a Torah scholar and teacher in Izmir. Disciple of Rabbi Barzilai Yaavetz and Rabbi Binyamin HaLevi, Av Beit Din of Izmir. Praised greatly by Rabbi Chaim Palagi (Amudei Chaim, Amud Torah, p. 76). Author of Yad Aharon and Merkavat HaMishneh, and other important works that were lost in a fire. In 1774, he ascended to Eretz Yisrael and settled in Hebron, where he became acquainted with the Chida, who studied his Torah and sanctity. Rabbi Shalom Moshe Chai Gagin (“HaRav Shm”CH, ” 1833–1883) – Av Beit Din and head of the Beit El community of mekubalim, among the greatest sages of Jerusalem. Only son of the first Chacham Bashi of Eretz Yisrael, Rabbi Chaim Avraham Gagin, HaRav AGa”N. Author of Shir Tehillot, Yismach Lev, Shir Mizmor, Sameach Nefesh, and others. His sons, Rabbi Avraham (Dayan) and Rabbi Yitzchak (kabbalist), established a printing press in Jerusalem in 1876. Rabbi Moshe Rafael Shalom Chutzin (d. 1900) – one of the great Roshei Yeshiva of Baghdad. Head of the large youth yeshiva Midrash Talmud Torah in Beit Zilka, where he trained many distinguished scholars. Rabbi Yitzchak HaKohen Shaki – one of the elder sages of Jerusalem, d. 1746.
