Letter of Blessing on the Birth of a Son, in the Holy Handwriting of the Holy Gaon Rabbi Moshe Grünwald, Av Beit Din of Khust, Author of Arugot HaBosem – Sent to His Prominent Disciple Rabbi Chaim Yehuda Deutsch, Dayan of Mako – Khust, Cheshvan 1903 ”שתזכה להכניסו בבריתו של אברהם אבינו ע”ה בשעה טובה ומוצלחת ותזכה לגדלו לתורה לחופה ולמעשים טובים מתוך נחת והרחבה” The letter before us was written by the Arugot HaBosem to his disciple, the Dayan of Mako, who had invited him to serve as sandak at his son’s brit: ”... מזלא טבא על הבשורה טובה שנתקבלתי ממך כי ברך השי”ת את פרי בטנך בבן זכר שנולד לך למז”ט, והנני בזה להקריב לך ברכתי ברכת מז”ט, יה”ר שתזכה להכניסו בבריתו של אאע”ה בשטו”מ ותזכה לגדלו לתורה לחולמעש”ט מתוך נחת והרחבה, ברבות הטובה לאלפי רבבה, עד נזכה לקיבוץ נדחי בת השובבה, בגילה ברינה בשמחה רבה. ותשואות חן חן לך על אשר כבדתני במצות מילה, אבל א”א לי למלאות משאלותיך כעת, כי אתה ידעת שבתחילת הזמן אני שאול לתלמידי תרביצאי והמה קיימין עלי ככסלא לאוגיא וא”א לפנות דעתי מהם עד איש על מקומו יבא בשלום ובני הרב מו”ה אברהם יוסף נ”י הוא כעת בבית חמיו נ”י [הגביר הרה”ח ר' יצחק בקנרוט מסחידיניצע]. והנני בזה אוה”נ דוש”ט וש”ת באה”ר ומצפה לבשו”ט” The Holy Gaon Rabbi Moshe Grünwald, author of Arugot HaBosem (1853–1910), was among the greatest Rabbis and poskim of Hungary, a foremost disciple of the Ksav Sofer of Pressburg, and a disciple of leading students of the Chasam Sofer – the holy Gaon Rabbi Menachem Katz and his grandfather Rabbi Yosef Grünwald. From his youth, he was connected to Chassidut and would travel to the holy Tzaddikim of Belz and Shinova. He served as Rabbi of the prestigious communities of Humenné and Kleinwardein, and in 1893 was appointed Rabbi and leader of the great city of Khust. In his days, the Khust Yeshiva became the greatest and most important yeshiva in Hungary, drawing students from across the world, even from the United States, who came to study Torah and Yirah under their great Rebbe. His son mentioned in the letter, the holy Gaon Rabbi Avraham Yosef Grünwald (1878–1928), author of She’elot U’Teshuvot Avnei Sheham, was his eldest son and successor. From 1906, he served as Av Beit Din of Mako, from 1910 as Av Beit Din of Khust in his father’s place, and from 1921 as Av Beit Din of Ungvár and Rosh Yeshiva of Ungvár. His descendants are among the greatest Admorim of our time, with thousands of Chassidim: the Admor of Pupa, the holy Rabbi Yaakov Yechezkel Grünwald, and the Admor of Skulen, the holy Rabbi Yeshaya Yaakov Portugal. The recipient of the letter, the holy Gaon Rabbi Chaim Yehuda Segal-Deutsch (1876–1938), was a prominent disciple of his Rebbe, the Arugot HaBosem. From 1903, he lived in Mako, where he served as Dayan and Moreh Hora’ah. A great Torah scholar, he served Hashem in holiness, purity, and self-sacrifice. He attached himself to the Mahari”d of Belz and the Mahar”i of Shinova. Author of Mayim Chayim on Tractate Niddah, Rechavat Yadayim, Be’er Yehuda on Sefer Charedim, Ruach Chaim, and Kol Yehuda on the Haggadah. His son, Rabbi Yehoshua Segal Deutsch, Rabbi of Katamon (father-in-law in the second marriage of the holy Admor, the Yeshuot Moshe of Vizhnitz). [1] leaf. 23 cm. Good condition. Stains. Slight wear.
