Postcard from Rabbi Nachman Wasserman, Av Beit Din of Stavisk, to the Vaad HaYeshivot in Vilna. 1932. ”Until now I was not able to travel… a large part of the reason was the assembly that took place in Lomza, for the benefit of the Lomza Yeshiva.” – postcard in the handwriting and with the signature of Rabbi Nachman Wasserman HY”D. Rabbi Nachman Shmuel Wasserman HY”D (1887–1943) – disciple of Rabbi Baruch Ber Leibowitz, Rabbi Raphael Shapira of the Volozhin Yeshiva, Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer, and the Alter of Novardok. After marriage, he founded a small yeshiva in Novardok and devoted himself to teaching Torah. From 1929, he served in the rabbinate of the towns of Pnishok and Lenin, and from 1933 as rabbi of the city of Stavisk (Bialystok–Lomza region). During World War II, the Bolsheviks occupied Lithuania, and despite persecutions and the threat of exile to Siberia, he continued with self-sacrifice to teach Torah. After the Nazis captured Lithuania, they tortured the rabbi and imprisoned him in a burning synagogue. By a miracle, he escaped to the Lomza ghetto, where he was killed sanctifying Hashem's name on 23 Tevet 1943, during the liquidation of the ghetto. His wife and daughter were murdered in the massacre of Stavisk’s Jews. His writings were lost in the Holocaust. His surviving sons were Rabbi Raphael Yitzchak Wasserman, Rosh Yeshiva of Ohel Yaakov in Bnei Brak and author of Mishnat Yitzchak, and Rabbi Yeshaya Yaakov Wasserman, Rosh Metivta in Yeshivat Tiferet Yerushalayim. Vaad HaYeshivot – founded in Vilna at the initiative of the Chafetz Chaim and Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski in 1924. The Vaad represented the many yeshivot operating in Eastern Europe and oversaw their financial support. For this purpose, an organized fundraising system was established in hundreds of communities, with many rabbis and activists assisting in encouraging contributions. Filing holes. Good condition.
