Background: On Shabbat, 18 Av 5689 (August 24, 1929), as part of the 1929 riots in Eretz Yisrael, thousands of Arabs attacked the Jewish community of Hebron with knives, swords, and axes. The rioters wounded, abused, and murdered dozens of the city’s Jews. About one-third of those murdered were students of the Hebron Yeshiva Knesset Yisrael. The victims were buried in a mass grave in the city. Following the massacre, Jewish homes were plundered, the Jewish settlement of Hebron came to an end for many years, and the Hebron Yeshiva was reestablished in Jerusalem.
