[2] Documents Regarding the Sefer Torah Written in Memory of Rabbeinu the “Chafetz Chaim.” 1933–1934. Letter to the “Committee for the Writing of a Sefer Torah in Memory of Rabbeinu the Gaon, Author of the Chafetz Chaim” [1933], together with lists and a financial report [1934]. * [1] leaf, 22 cm. Background : In the year of mourning after the passing of the Chafetz Chaim, a meeting of leading rabbis and roshei yeshiva resolved to write a communal Sefer Torah in his memory, with the income from selling its letters dedicated to supporting yeshivot. For this purpose, a “Committee for the Writing of a Sefer Torah” was established under the auspices of the Vaad HaYeshivot. Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski issued a proclamation urging the public to take part in this mitzvah of writing a Sefer Torah and supporting Torah, “to establish a memorial for the soul of the Gaon and holy tzaddik who gave his life throughout all his days for the Torah—to teach it to Israel and to spread it among the people.” The writing of the Sefer Torah and the beginning of selling the letters were marked with a festive gathering in Kislev 1933. The Sefer Torah was placed in the Beit Midrash in Radin, and the names of the donors were recorded in a worldwide memorial book.
