Sefer Tomer Devorah by the Ramak – Mantua, 1623 – A Segulah Sefer for Protection from the Well-Known Illness The Sefer Tomer Devorah, which guides how to cleave to the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, was first printed in Venice, 1558. The edition before us is the fourth edition, and since then, more than one hundred editions of the Sefer have been printed. This edition was printed in the same form and layout as the first edition, including the introduction and conclusion of Rabbi Moshe Basola, the publisher of the first edition. The great sages of the generations greatly extolled this Sefer and the study of it. The holy Shelah writes in his approbation (to the Prague edition, 1621) about the Sefer: ”כולו יראת שמים וקבול עול מלכותו יתברך... ובודאי מי שרגיל בספר הנכבד הזה ומקיימו, יש לו מהלכים בין העומדים וזוכה לחיי העולם הזה ולחיי העולם הבא שכולו טוב... וכל מי שירגיל בספר הזה ואומר אותו בכל שבוע או בכל חודש מובטח הוא שהוא בן עולם הבא ואשרי לו וטוב לו מי שמרגיל עצמו בו, ובאמת מצוה לכל אדם לקנות הספר הזה ” In his Sefer Shelah he also wrote at the end of Sha’ar HaTeshuvah that there is great importance to study it during the Ten Days of Repentance. Many of the great sages of Chassidut and Mussar strongly recommended learning Tomer Devorah during the month of Elul and the Ten Days of Repentance. The Gaon Tzaddik Rabbi Moshe Halberstam zt”l relates a wondrous testimony he personally heard from the holy Gaon Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar, author of VaYoel Moshe, in the name of Rabbeinu the Divrei Chaim of Sanz: “That the very study of the holy Sefer Tomer Devorah is a segulah for protection from the well-known illness, may Hashem spare us.” (From his approbation to Tomer Devorah with the commentary VeHalachta Bidrachav, Wickliffe, 2006).
