On the title page an ownership inscription: “Came into my possession, Avraham Rovigo.” The Gaon and Kabbalist Rabbi Avraham ben Rabbi Rafael Rovigo (ca. 1650–1714) – one of the great Kabbalists of Italy and the principal disciple of the renowned Kabbalist Rabbi Moshe Zacuto. A wealthy and generous merchant, his home in Modena was open to all Torah scholars, including Kabbalists and emissaries. He established a yeshiva in his home and raised great Torah scholars. In 1702, he ascended to Eretz Yisrael at the head of a group of twenty-five people and founded in Jerusalem a yeshiva for the study of Nigleh and Nistar. He was chosen to succeed the Rishon LeTzion Rabbi Moshe ibn Chaviv. From 1705, he volunteered to travel abroad as the community’s emissary to raise funds, and on his third mission, he passed away in Mantua. His disciple, Rabbi Mordechai Ashkenazi, authored a Sefer explaining passages of the Zohar and Kabbalistic secrets as received from his teacher, and named the work after his Rav: Eshal Avraham.
