Shu”t Harim by the 'Chiddushei Harim' – Josephov, 1867 – First edition — Segulah Sefer to halt a plague The first work printed from the Torah of the author of Chiddushei Harim after his passing. An interesting story is told regarding the printing of this Sefer: in 1867 a severe plague struck the cities and towns of Poland, claiming many victims. The Admor Rabbi Chanoch Henich of Alexander sent that year one of the Chassidim, Rabbi Shlomo Buchweitz of Warsaw, on a mission to the Sfas Emes of Gur, to ask him to begin printing the writings of his grandfather, the Chiddushei Harim, and in his words: “Certainly it will be a Segulah that the illness will cease, when the words of a Gaon and Tzaddik who studied the Torah in holiness and purity, in truth, will be publicized; and regarding such Torah Subjects it is said: Great is Torah, for it gives life to those who practice it.” When the Sfas Emes heard the words of the Admor of Alexander, he began to edit and prepare for print the responsa writings of his grandfather, “and as soon as it appeared in print, the illness ceased” (see Meir Einei HaGolah, section 664).
