Monogrammed gold snuff box — engraved cartouche work, 19th century (?) A luxurious rectangular snuff box made of gold (stamped 14K), measuring 2.5 × 3.5 cm and weighing 23 grams! The box is distinguished by its high-quality finish and a precise closing mechanism that produces a clear clicking sound—evidence of fine craftsmanship and excellent preservation. The front of the lid is decorated with a stylized floral and foliate cartouche, combining Repoussé and Chasing work with delicate hand Engraving to accentuate the ornamentation. At the center of the lid is an oval enclosing the intertwined initials B and A, likely representing the owner’s initials. Along the sides of the box appears additional decoration: a continuous engraved band of flowers and leaves. An additional stamp is present on the box, unidentified. On the inner side of the lid are engraved the initials A.R. During this period, such boxes were commonly given as personal gifts or as status symbols, and owners often engraved their initials to make the piece personal and distinctive. Their primary use was for carrying finely ground snuff, often mixed with fragrant oils. The tight closure was intended to prevent the snuff from drying out.
