Sefer Pri Etz Chaim –Corrected According to the Manuscript Copy of Rabbi Shabsai of Rashkov, Disciple of the Baal Shem Tov, with Numerous Additions Printed Here for the First Time – Korets, 1785 – With an Early Signature This edition is the earliest source stating that Lag BaOmer is the day of the passing of Rashbi. Sefer Pri Etz Chaim, discourses and intentions of the Arizal for the prayers of weekday, Shabbos, and Moadim, by Moreinu Harav Reb Chaim Vital, edited by Rabbi Meir Poppers. The Sefer Pri Etz Chaim was first printed in Korets in 1782, but the present edition, printed in 1785, derives from manuscripts arranged in a different recension and is in fact a distinct edition in its textual form from the edition printed in 1782. The present edition was edited by the Mekubal Rabbi Meir Poppers, whereas the 1782 edition was, in its first half, edited by the Mekubal Rabbi Nosson Shapira, and only its second half by Rabbi Meir Poppers. In addition, the present edition includes more than one hundred glosses and additions not appearing in the 1782 edition; some begin with the word “Tzemach” (that is, glosses of the Mekubal Rabbi Yaakov Tzemach), and others begin “MeHaChaverim” (that is, Chiddushim originating from other disciples of the Arizal and not from Rabbi Chaim Vital). The present edition also includes glosses from additional Mekubalim, such as Mahar”m Di Lonzano, and others. One of the well-known additions printed here for the first time is the determination of Lag BaOmer as the day of the passing of the Tanna Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. On leaf 108a it is printed: ”והטע'[ם] שמת רשב”י ביום ל”ג בעומר, כי הוא מתלמידי ר”ע שמתו בספי'[רת] העומר” whereas in the 1782 edition it is printed: ”רשב”י... שמח בל”ג בעומר” (leaf 101/1). From that point onward, this paragraph was added and printed in all later editions of Pri Etz Chaim. On the page following the title page, it is printed that the present edition was prepared according to: ספר פרי עץ חיים מוגה מאד, המועתק מכתיבת יד של הרב המנוח החסיד המקובל מו”ה שבתי ראשקובר ז”ל, אשר כל כתביו בחזקת מתוקן כנודע... וגם נוסף בספר הלזה כמה הגהות מתלמידי האר”י ז”ל אשר לא שזפתן עין בעת הדפסה ראשונה.. Early signature on the title page: ”הק' וואלף [בלי/אבלי ז' נ”ק ?]” [1], 132 leaves. 33 cm. Good–fair condition. Dampstains on some leaves. Old binding worn with a new spine.
