Responsa Masa’as Binyamin, by Rabbi Binyamin Aharon Slonik, Av Beis Din of Podhajce – Metz, 1776 Is this the personal exampler of the author of Afsei Eretz of Nanash? On the title page appears a signature: ”... אפרים פישל... ” Before the word “ אפרים ” there is a smudged area of ink, and it is possible that the name “ ישראל ” was originally written beneath it—however, this is not clearly legible. Accordingly, it is possible but not definitive that this is the personal exampler of HaGaon HaKadosh Rabbi Yisrael Ephraim Fishl Schreiber, Av Beis Din of Nanash, author of Afsei Eretz. The identification remains uncertain. HaGaon HaKadosh Rabbi Yisrael Ephraim Fishl Schreiber [Sofer] (1822–1899) – Av Beis Din and Admor in Nanash. His maternal grandfather was the son-in-law of Rabbi Yisrael Yehuda Teitelbaum, the only brother of the Yismach Moshe. He was a foremost disciple of his great-uncle, the Yismach Moshe, of the Chasam Sofer, of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz, and of Harav HaKadosh Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch, Av Beis Din of Liska, author of Ach Pri Tevuah. He was a close confidant of the Yetev Lev of Sighet, who held him in exceptionally high regard. In 1862, he was appointed Rabbi of Nanash in Hungary, where he served for thirty-eight years. His writings were published posthumously as Afsei Eretz (Munkatch, 1900–1912). He was deeply versed in the teachings of the Chasam Sofer, and merited to be present at his passing.
