The commentary of the Gra in the present Sefer is a unified and expanded version based on two earlier commentaries that had been printed previously, edited by Rabbi Shmuel Ben Rabbi Eliezer Aharon Luria. The commentary Or Chadash was published from an ancient manuscript, edited by Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv. With stamps of HaGaon Rabbi Naftali Hertz HaLevi, Av Beis Din of Jaffa, and of his son Rabbi Shlomo HaLevi, and with the signature of HaGaon Rabbi 'חיים הלוי אבתר המכונה זגול ס”ט' Inside the Sefer is a small leaf containing writings in the manner of Kabbalah. Rabbi Naftali Hertz HaLevi Widenbaum (1852–1902) – Gaon, Mekubal, and holy man; the first Ashkenazic Rav of Jaffa. Born in Bialystok, he immigrated to Eretz HaKodesh at the age of thirty, settled in Meah Shearim, and founded a Yeshiva there. In 1886 he was sent by HaGaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant and HaGaon Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin to serve as Rav of the Ashkenazic community newly established in Jaffa. In 1891 the Ashkenazic and Sephardic communities united, and Rabbi HaLevi became the undisputed authority in matters of the Jewish settlement. He authored a commentary on the Siddur of the Gra. HaGaon Rabbi Chaim HaLevi Avtar Zagul – among the immigrants from Damascus, author of Likutei Chazal (Jerusalem, 1915) and Darkei Chaim on Tractate Avos (Jerusalem, 1926). See about him: Y.
