Postcard from Maran the Steipler to the Vaad HaYeshivos in Vilna. The eminent Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky (1899–1985), author of Kehillos Yaakov, was among the Gedolei HaDor, revered and sanctified in his generation as possessing Ruach HaKodesh, and whatever emerged from his mouth was fulfilled. He was the close brother-in-law of Maran the Chazon Ish. He was named after Harav HaKadosh Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael of Cherkass, as his family descended from the Chassidim of Hornosteipel. Author of the Sefarim Sha’arei Tevunah, Kehillos Yaakov, and other works. He served as Rosh Mesivta in the Yeshiva Beis Yosef in Pinsk. In 1934, he immigrated to Eretz Yisrael, where he became Rosh Yeshiva of Beis Yosef in Bnei Brak and president of the Chazon Ish Kollel in the city. He was affectionately known as the Steipler, after his place of origin. In his later years, he became one of the leaders of the Torah community. His son was the eminent Gaon Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky.
