Letter of Recommendation from HaGaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Lubchansky to the “Vaad HaYeshivos” – Cheshvan 1938 Recommendation on behalf of the Bachur Yosef Markolis, who was traveling to Vilna to consult physicians. Written on official stationery. HaGaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Lubchansky was among the leading figures of the Mussar movement of his generation. He was born in Baranovichi, where his father served as Rav. Among the earliest disciples of the Yeshiva of Rabbi Yosef Yoizel Horowitz, the Saba of Novardok, he later became his son-in-law. After the passing of his father he served for a time as Rav of Baranovichi, but later transferred the position to his brother-in-law Rabbi Dovid Weitzel. He headed the network of Novardok Yeshivos in Tsaritsyn and Kharkov. After crossing the border into Poland, HaGaon Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman appointed him Mashgiach Ruchani in his Yeshiva Ohel Torah in Baranovichi. In addition, he was one of the central pillars of the Beis Yosef–Novardok Yeshiva network founded by his father-in-law, the Saba of Novardok. At gatherings of Novardok students he would deliver profound Mussar discourses and words of inspiration, often lasting many hours and received with deep affection and reverence, urging the pursuit of human perfection and total dedication to a life of Torah and purity of character. He was regarded as one of the singular personalities of the generation—great in Torah and great in character—combining Chassidus and action. Filled with fervor in the service of Hashem, he was a renowned Tzaddik and a remarkable man of exceptional humility.
