Historical background: On 2 Adar 1970, during the second reading of the proposed amendment to the Law of Return, Member of Knesset Rabbi Menachem Porush spoke strongly against the Reform movement, arguing that it fundamentally denies both the sacred Halachic religious values and the national values of the Jewish people. He read passages from a Reform prayer book in order to demonstrate that prayers concerning the return to Zion had been omitted from it, and at the conclusion of his remarks, he threw the prayer book from the Knesset podium. At the end of that session, Rabbi Porush issued a statement explaining that the act had been done “in a moment of anger.” Following the incident, the Knesset committee decided to suspend Rabbi Porush from one session of the Knesset. A week later, on 9 Adar II 1970, Rabbi Porush submitted an appeal against the decision to remove him from a session of the Knesset. During the debate, sharp criticism—often expressed in harsh language—was directed by members of Knesset against Rabbi Porush’s conduct. The following day, Harav Shach wrote the present letter, in which he strengthened Rabbi Porush’s hands in his struggle against the Reform movement. Filing holes with slight damage to one letter.
