Register of the Society “Chesed Ne’urim, ” Founded in 1833 — Várpalota, 1850 “This register belongs to the society Chesed Ne’urim, made by three Gabbaim… in the year 1833… here in the holy community of Várpalota.” A magnificent manuscript register recording the members of the Chesed Ne’urim association, established to support the Talmud Torah education of poor children. Várpalota (Hungary), Chol HaMoed Sukkos 1850. [1], 41, [34] leaves. Colorful manuscript. With an illustrated title page and original leather binding bearing gilt lettering. Many additional blank leaves are bound afterward. On the verso of the title page is written: 'זאת הפנקס שמות אנשים אשר התחברו יחד חברה דחסד נעורים עם החברה תלמוד תורה איש איש על מקומו לפי כבודו בתיחדו באגודה אחת להיות מתומכי ילדי עניי ישראל ללמוד תורה. נעשה בשנת תרי”א חה”מ דסוכת לפ”ק' On all the following leaves appears a circular leafy frame. On dozens of the first leaves, a name is written within each frame; later, only the frame remains. On leaves 3, 10, 13, and 31, several lines were also added in Yiddish. The names of the Gabbaim of the society are Reb Isaac Ledetzky, Harav Chaim Zev Wolf Ben Reb Pesach Pfeiffer, and the Bachur Yisrael Leib Ben Reb Shlomo Leichtner. A historical artifact from the community of Várpalota, a community of lovers of Torah and men of kindness, which was destroyed in the Holocaust, 1944, HY”D.
