Responsa Mahar”i MiTrani – Fürth, 1768 – Personal Exemplar of HaGaon HaKadosh Mahar”i Asad with Several Glosses in His Holy Handwriting With the signatures of his disciple, HaGaon Rabbi Moshe Herzfeld, Av Beis Din of Szilágy-Balázsháza. On the front endpaper appears the signature of Mahar”i Asad: ”הק' יודא אסאד” On the title page and on the front endpaper appear the signatures: ”אני הק' משה הערצפעלד” On the leaves of the Sefer are several glosses and references in the Holy Handwriting of HaGaon HaKadosh Rabbi Yehuda Asad. The wonder of the generation, HaGaon HaKadosh Rabbi Yehuda Asad (1794–1866), among the greatest Rabbanim of Hungary and one of the most prominent Poskim of the generation following Maran the Chasam Sofer, who referred to him as “an outstanding scholar, a righteous and upright man.” Rav of Szerdahely, where he also headed a Yeshiva with hundreds of outstanding Torah students. Among his disciples were many of the leading Rabbanim of Hungary. Maran the Divrei Chaim referred to him as “Mofes Hador”. Author of the responsa Yehuda Ya’aleh. His disciple, HaGaon Rabbi Moshe Ben Reb Leib Herzfeld (1816–1872; The Chasam Sofer and His Disciples, pp. 348–349), was born in Milchdorf and became the son-in-law of Rabbi Daniel Prostitz, Raavad of Pressburg. He studied under the Chasam Sofer and under his son, the Kesav Sofer. Several years after his marriage, he lived near his father-in-law in Pressburg. He received rabbinic ordination from his teacher, the Kesav Sofer, and from Mahar”i Asad. In 1856 he was appointed Av Beis Din of Szilágy-Balázsháza, where he served until his passing in 1872. His Rebbe the Kesav Sofer wrote of him in his ordination: ... מפארי מופלגי בחורים בישיבתינו... ומשה בלי פיסוק שימש איזהו שנים לפני אבא מאוה”ג זצ”ל, ומצא חן ושכל טוב בעיניו, ועלה ונתעלה ברב שקידתו, ומילא ידו בחריפות ובקיאות בסוגי' הש”ס והלכותיהם Mahar”i Asad wrote about him: ”ידיד נפשי, הרב המאור הגדול המפורסם, מורג חרוץ עצום, סיני ועוקר הרים, צדיק נשגב”(Shu”t Mahari”a, Yoreh Deah, no. 202). Elsewhere, he wrote of him: ”הוגה בתורה יומם וליל... מופלג ומפורסם חריף ובקי עצום צדיק נשגב” [1], 145, [2] leaves. 33 cm. Fair condition. Lower margins wormed. Wear. Stains. Old binding damaged.
