Eleven Lines in the Holy Handwriting of Rabbeinu Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar — from the Period of His Stay in Sharon Springs in the Summer of 1958, when Speech Was Forbidden to Him In the summer of 1958, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum became hoarse and suffered from pains in his throat. The doctors recommended that for a certain period he impose upon himself complete silence until the hoarseness would pass. During that time Rabbeinu Yoel indeed minimized his speech as much as possible, and everything he wished to convey to his attendants he communicated in writing. On the present leaf Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum records his doubts and deliberations regarding the approaching Yamim Noraim, during which he was accustomed to serve as Shaliach Tzibbur with a voice that split flames of fire, according to his sacred custom. These are his words: “Yesterday I said that I think it may be possible to remain here another Shabbos Rosh Chodesh for the sake of guarding my speech, and now I am in doubt, since several times during the period I improved completely, and when I prayed once the matter returned; and if I wait until close to the Yamim Noraim and begin to pray, if, Heaven forbid, it returns, there will be no time to do anything further. Therefore, it may be worthwhile to attempt in another four weeks or three weeks before the Yamim Tovim to see the situation, or perhaps to be next week by the doctor to examine the matter.” At the end of the present page, he briefly writes regarding another communal matter: “I spoke with him and he promised me to make a partition of boards around it, for the planks are not sufficient, and he told me explicitly that he will make the partition, and I did not see by him any doubt in the matter.” [1] leaf. 20 cm.
