First sefer from Rabbi Yehudah Alkalai, 'Darchei Noam' in Ladino. Bilogrado (Belgrade, Serbia), 1839. - Sefer 'Darchei Noam' , for Hebrew language study in short in Spanish language [Ladino] for the purpose of the Jewish children, to guide them and assist the general public of the Jewish children to read Tana”ch, [by Rabbi Yehuda Alkalai]. Instampforia Dil Printzipdila press, Serbia, Belgrade, 1839. At the beginning of the sefer, page 23 the author mentions the earth quake event that occurred two years prior in Zafed. 25 [1], 68 [2] pages, about 19cm. Ladino. With listings and signatures. Rabbi Yehuda Alkalai (1798-1878) Learned Torah from his father, the Dayan Rabbi Shlomo Chei Alkelai and from his Rabbi Eliezer Papo the 'Peleh Yo'etz'. Rabbi Yehuda served as Melamed (teacher) of children, and was Rav of the Sefaradi community in the city of Zemun close to Belgrade, and wrote for his students his first sefer ”Darchei Noam”. Following the Damascus Libel in the year 1840, he searched for a soluition for the problems in exile and planned programs to establish the Hebrew language as the language of the Jewish nation, to increase immigration to Israel and develop political life there. His ideas he publicized in the pamphlet ”Shalom Jerusalem” in his famous sefer ”Minchat Yehuda”, and in his other sefarim, amongst them; ”Kol Mevaser”, ”Sefer Chaim”. ”Gorel L'Hashem”, ”Mevaser Tov”, ”Shema Yisrael”, ”Me'oded Anavim”, ”Menchem Tzion”. He traveled the Jewish communities in wider Europe to wake up the Jews to settle in Israel. In 1874 he immigrated to Israel with his wife, Esther, and settled in Jerusalem. He passed away four years later, in 1878 without seeing any of his plans materialize. The town of Or Yehuda is named after him, and five of his students established the city of Petach Tikva.
