Before us is a particularly important and pedigreed exampler — the personal exampler of HaGaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Shmuel Heller, Av Beis Din of Tzefas, with his signatures in his Holy Handwriting. 28 leaves. HaGaon HaTzaddik Rabbi Shmuel Heller (1785–1884), Ashkenazic Rabbi of Tzefas for many decades, was among the central and revered figures of the Old Yishuv in Eretz Yisrael. A descendant of the Tosafos Yom Tov, he was raised in his youth in the home of the Chozeh of Lublin, meriting special closeness and even partaking at his Seder table. He later immigrated to Eretz Yisrael, miraculously survived the devastating earthquake that struck Tzefas in 1837, and following the passing of his Rebbe, HaGaon HaKadosh Rabbi Avraham Dov of Avritch, author of Bas Ayin, was appointed Av Beis Din of Tzefas, serving in that role for approximately forty years. Beyond his greatness in Torah and Chassidus, he was also known for his extensive knowledge in medicine and pharmacy, and had a significant impact on the life of the community in the city.
