HaGaon Rabbi Meir Leib Frey, Av Beis Din of Shuran, known as “Der Heiliger Shuraner Rav” (1878–1944) — among the foremost Roshei Yeshivah and Poskim of his generation. His father, Rabbi Yitzchak Tzvi, was the beloved son-in-law of Maran the Kesav Sofer. He acquired much of his Torah from his Rebbe and uncle, Maran the Shevet Sofer, and from his distinguished Rebbe HaGaon Rabbi Kalev Feivel Schlesinger, Av Beis Din of Topoľčany, author of Toras Bar Nash, and HaGaon Rabbi Mordechai Leib Winkler, author of Levushei Mordechai, Av Beis Din of Mád. On the day he married his cousin, daughter of HaGaon Rabbi Yeshayah Ehrenfeld, Av Beis Din of Shuran, he was appointed to succeed him, and from then on became widely known throughout the Jewish world as the Shuraner Rav. Author of the Sefer Shevet Mishor. In his approbation of that work, his uncle, Rabbi Shimon Sofer, described him as: ”The renowned Gaon and Tzaddik, distinguished, sharp and expert in every area of Torah, a man of many accomplishments... already famous for his greatness in Torah and righteousness, and privileged to disseminate Torah and fear of Heaven in a great Yeshivah with hundreds of students.” Murdered Al Kiddush Hashem in Auschwitz.
