Pamphlet in the handwriting of Rabbi Yosef Eiger, Av Beis Din of Halberstadt: Halachic correspondence between Rabbi Akiva Eiger of Posen and his cousin Rabbi Akiva Eiger of Halberstadt. Pamphlet of 6 pages, in the handwriting of Rabbi Yosef (son of Rabbi Akiva) Eiger of Halberstadt, containing Halachic discussion regarding the prohibition of Ever Min HaChai for a Ben Noach between his father and his father’s cousin, HaGaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger of Posen, and his son Rabbi Shlomo. [3] leaves, written on both sides of each leaf. Printed in the journal “Moriah, ” year 20, issues 1–2 (229–230), Kislev 1994. The present pamphlet, in the handwriting of Rabbi Yosef Eiger, documents an important Halachic exchange between Gedolei Yisrael of the Eiger family. At the head of p. 1: “In the responsa of my father, the Rav and Gaavad, Moreinu Harav Rabbi Akiva Eiger z”l, Av Beis Din here of the holy community of Halberstadt.” In the margin of p. 4: “Until here are the words of the sage, my father, the Rav z”l. I am the writer, his son Yosef, son of HaGaon Moreinu Harav Rabbi Akiva Eiger z”l, who was Av Beis Din of the holy community of Halberstadt.” At the head of p. 5: “And behold, the mouth of the righteous utters wisdom — my relative, the renowned Gaon Moreinu Harav Rabbi Akiva Eiger z”l, Av Beis Din of the holy community of Posen, wrote to Moreinu Harav, my father, the great Gaon z”l, in his golden language word for word: ‘And regarding the essential difficulty of my relative the Gaon, may he live, it appears possible to answer…’” At the margin of p. 5 and head of p. 6: “From me, his kinsman who loves him as his own soul, Akiva. And now I shall write what was written by the son of my relative, the aforementioned great z”l, namely my relative HaGaon Moreinu Harav Rabbi Shlomo Eiger z”l, Av Beis Din of the holy community of Posen, and this is his pure and golden language.” HaGaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger, Av Beis Din of Halberstadt (1767–1824) — son of HaGaon Rabbi Wolf Eiger, maintained continuous Halachic correspondence with his cousin HaGaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger of Posen. Rabbi Akiva Eiger of Halberstadt and his cousin, Rabbi Akiva Eiger of Posen, were both named after their grandfather, HaGaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger the first, author of “Mishnas D'Rabbi Akiva.” Rabbi Akiva of Halberstadt served as head of the Kloiz in Halberstadt, and from 1814 served as Rav of Halberstadt. His son, Rabbi Yosef Eiger (1794–1853) — scribe of the present manuscript — succeeded his father as head of the Kloiz in Halberstadt and disseminated Torah and Mussar there. Stains, fold marks.
