Accompanied by a stamp issued in honor of the completion of the second cycle of Daf Yomi. “We are confident that Your Honor will heed our cry, and the Yeshivah, together with the merit of its great founder of blessed memory, is worthy of protecting all those who assist it, granting them every good.” Letter from the administration of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin to Rabbi Yehudah Leib Landau, Av Beis Din of Johannesburg, requesting assistance for the Yeshivah in light of its severe financial condition. Lublin, 1937. Accompanied by an exceedingly rare stamp issued in honor of the completion of the second cycle of Daf Yomi on 28 Sivan 1938. Due to its historical importance, we reproduce much of it below: B”H, Lublin, 27 Cheshvan (Bechoros 24), 1937 To the honorable and distinguished, this great man, the renowned Gaon, adorned with all branches of knowledge, noble and eminent, seeking the good of his people, the honorable Rabbi Yehudah Leib Landau, shlita, Av Beis Din of Johannesburg. We hereby inform Your Honor and turn to his exalted personage, the helmsman of Judaism in his country, regarding our holy institution Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, the glory and splendor of all Judaism, which has already educated within its walls hundreds of students who became great in Torah and wisdom, and many of whom already sit in judgment as Rabbis and leaders of Israel; and which even today educates within it more than three hundred students, the finest and choicest of the Torah youth from within the country and from abroad, may they live, whose bright future is apparent, that they will grow, with Hashem's help, into Gedolei Yisrael and leaders of the nation — calls upon you for assistance. The spiritual condition of the Yeshivah, with Hashem's help, stands at the proper height and delights the eye of all who see it and enter its gates. The spiritual leadership, consisting of ten Gedolei Yisrael in our country together with its president, HaGaon HaKadosh Rabbi Moshe Friedman shlita, the Boyaner Rebbe, supervise its spiritual conduct and care for its development in the spirit of its great founder, zt”l. The Rosh Mesivta is the renowned Gaon of our generation, the Rabbi of Koziegłowy, shlita, and under their influence, the students grow stronger in Torah and knowledge and dedicate all their strength to Torah. In contrast, its material condition is very difficult. The Yeshivah is presently in terrible distress, and its entire existence, now and in the future, stands in danger. After the passing of Rabbeinu, the founder of the Yeshivah, zt”l, which shook the entire world and stirred the institutions of the Yeshivah, Polish Jewry girded itself with great strength to save the great inheritance of that Tzaddik. The upheaval that passed through the camp of Israel following his sudden passing stirred the hearts of all groups of Israel, who brought their contributions to redeem the Yeshivah building from foreign hands, and the greater part of the debts that had been secured by mortgage upon the building were then repaid. However, debts still remained upon the building [...] We therefore call upon Your Honor, may he live, to have mercy upon this great and holy institution and to exert all of his considerable strength to organize a broad fundraising campaign there among his community, as befits the stature and essence of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin [...] The letter is signed by the president, Rabbi Yosef Königsberg, and the secretary, Rabbi Aharon Leibwohl.
