Ponevezh, 1906. “When it became known to me that the question of the rabbinate in your city stands upon the agenda, I said to propose before you to choose as Rav for your city my honored friend, HaGaon… Eliezer Luft of the city of Telz. I know him to be a great man in Torah, exceptionally distinguished in his deep and sharp intellect, and with broad knowledge in Shas and Poskim, as one of the great men of our time. He possesses talent in the wisdom of derashah to expound publicly with words pleasant to the listening ear. Likewise, I know his pure fear of Heaven and his upright conduct, exceedingly desirable… and in him you will find all the virtues enumerated by the Sages for a great Rav B'Yisrael… and it shall be for honor and glory to your congregation that such a great Rav dwell within it… and you shall be grateful to me for the good counsel which I have advised you…” Enthusiastic letter of recommendation from HaGaon Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak Rabinowitz, Av Beis Din of Ponevezh, to a community in the district of Vilkomir, in which he recommends that they accept upon themselves as Rav HaGaon Rabbi Eliezer Luft. Ponevezh, 1906. [2] pages, in his handwriting, with the signature and stamp of HaGaon Rabbi Yitzchak Yaakov Rabinowitz. HaGaon Rabbi Itzeleh of Ponovezh (1854–1919) — among the greatest disseminators of Torah in the Yeshivos of Lithuania, disciple of the “Bris Yaakov” and the “Beis HaLevi” in Brisk. During his years of study in Brisk, he learned for two years in Chavrusa with Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik. Upon the recommendation of the Beis HaLevi, the Alter of Slabodka appointed him to serve as Rosh Yeshiva in the “Knesses Yisrael” Yeshiva of Slabodka, where he taught Torah for five years and produced students who became Gedolei Yisrael, among them Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel and the “Minchas Baruch.” In 1895 he moved to serve as Rav of the city of Ponevezh in place of the Aderes, and disseminated Torah there for approximately twenty-five years. Alongside Rabbi Chaim Ozer and the Chafetz Chaim, he bore the burden of the Jewish people and accomplished great things at the Rabbinic Conference in Petersburg and in additional matters. His Chiddushim and responsa were published in the Sefarim “Zecher Yitzchak, ” “Chiddushei Hagri”r, ” and “Chiddushei Hagri”y M'Ponevezh.” Fold marks and short tears along the fold lines, filing holes, stains.
