Letter from HaGaon Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman, Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshivah of Ponevezh, to the Rishon LeZion [Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Chai Uziel], inviting him to participate in the dedication of a “children's home established for the surviving children of the Diaspora.” Bnei Brak, 1946. Background: One of the great endeavors to which the Rav of Ponevezh devoted himself after the Holocaust was the establishment of institutions for child survivors of the Holocaust. The Rav of Ponevezh cared for all their needs as a compassionate father. He also fought to ensure that the Tehran Children would receive a religious education and extended his patronage to them. HaGaon Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman, Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshivah of Ponevezh (1888–1969) — among the greatest Roshei Yeshivah of Lithuania in the last generations. He studied under HaGaon Rabbi Eliezer Gordon and HaGaon Rabbi Shimon Shkop in Telz, and spent three years studying under the Chafetz Chaim in Radin. In 1919, he succeeded HaGaon Rabbi Itzele Ponevezher as Rav of Ponevezh, and from then on, his name became inseparably linked with the city. Following the Nazi invasion of Lithuania, he escaped and arrived in Eretz Yisrael in 1944, where he established Yeshivas Ponevezh. In 1953, on the 27th of Nisan (the date of the Nazi invasion of Lithuania), the dedication ceremony of the Yeshivah building was held (see below, loan certificate). In addition, he served as a spiritual father to Holocaust survivors and devoted himself especially to the children through the establishment of a network of children's homes for the survivors. Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Chai ben Rabbi Yosef Raphael Uziel (1880–1953) — the Rishon LeZion and Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Eretz Yisrael, and author of the Mishpetei Uziel series. He studied at the Doresh Zion Talmud Torah and at Yeshivas Tiferes Yerushalayim. He later studied under Rabbi Yaakov Shaul Elishar, the Yesha Berachah, served as a Rav in Yeshivas Tiferes Yerushalayim, and founded Yeshivas Machzikei Torah. In 1911, he was appointed Chacham Bashi of the Jaffa district alongside the Ashkenazic rabbi, HaRav Kook. In 1919, Rabbi Uziel was appointed president of the Mizrachi movement. From 1921 to 1923, he served as Rav of Salonika. Upon returning to Eretz Yisrael, he served as Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv–Jaffa. In 1939, he was appointed Rishon LeZion. Following the establishment of the State of Israel, he became its first Sephardic Chief Rabbi, alongside the Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog.
