Letter from one of the greatest masters of Mussar in recent generations, Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler, to his cousin, Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Skulski of London. In the letter, Rabbi Dessler apologizes for being “burdened with household and outside concerns, and naturally my words were postponed, and afterward the Moad arrived, which this time I succeeded in sanctifying even during its Chol [apparently meaning that he succeeded in refraining from writing during Chol HaMoed], and even now I wish to elaborate, but I fear that I may not even achieve brevity, therefore I at least grasped hold of this.” Further on, Rabbi Dessler informs the recipient of the hours during which he is at home should he wish to visit him (a total of only three hours a day: between 11:00–12:30 and in the afternoon between 5:00–6:30). He concludes: 'שלך המחכה מאוד לראותך אליהו אליעזר' The recipient, Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Skulski of London, was among the leaders of the Adas Yisrael community in London and greatly assisted Rabbi Dessler upon his arrival in London. Rabbi Eliyahu Dessler, author of “Michtav MeEliyahu” (1892–1953) — son of Rabbi Reuven Dov Dessler of Kelm, grandson of Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Grodzinski, father-in-law of HaGaon Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski, and son-in-law of the founder of the Mussar movement, Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, thus making Rabbeinu a great-grandson of HaGaon Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. He was educated in Kelm and in 1927, emigrated to London. In 1948, he was invited by Rabbi Kahaneman, Rosh Yeshiva of Ponovezh, to serve as spiritual supervisor (“Mashgiach”) at the Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. He raised the banner of Mussar within the Yeshiva and beyond, and became renowned as one of the leading teachers of Mussar and fear of Heaven of his generation. His series of Sefarim, “Michtav MeEliyahu, ” are foundational works adorning every library of Mussar Sefarim and a cornerstone for pure Hashkafa and acquisition of the paths of Yirah.
