Monsey, 11 Sivan 1983. “And now a sum for charity has come my way, and I said to send you three hundred dollars: two hundred for the son and one hundred for the daughter, and may He grant that you merit to derive pleasure and Nachas from them according to your heart’s desire.” Letter from HaGaon Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky to Reb Yaakov Dov Perlin on the occasion of the marriages of his son and daughter. HaGaon Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky (1891–1986) — one of the leaders of Charedi Jewry in the later generations, Rosh Yeshivah of Mesivta Torah Vodaath, and a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah in America. A remarkable Gaon in all areas of Torah, including disciplines not commonly mastered. His Sefer on the Torah, Emes LeYaakov, combines genius and broad knowledge of the Torah commentators, Torah translations, as well as matters of grammar and Masorah. Reb Yaakov Dov ben Rabbi Elchanan Perlin (1927–2017) — grandson of HaGaon Rabbi Chaim Dov Kantor, the Shochet U'Bodek of the Zichron Yaakov region. Reb Yaakov Dov was a student of Yeshivas Tiferes Yisrael in Haifa. He moved to Jerusalem in order to provide his children with a proper Torah education. He earned a meager livelihood as a guard at the entrance to the Mapai headquarters in Jerusalem, and at the end of each workday, he attended the Daf Yomi shiur of his Rebbe, the renowned Jerusalem Tzaddik Rabbi Aryeh Levin. For many years, he accompanied his Rebbe and engaged in helping the needy and visiting the sick without limitation. He cared for his Rebbe, Rabbi Aryeh Levin, with extraordinary devotion and merited his blessing that he would be together with him in Gan Eden. Fold marks, minor wear along the margins.
