Receipt for Money Received from HaGaon Rabbi Shmuel Salant for the Study of Mishnayos for a Yahrzeit, in His Holy Handwriting of HaGaon Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. Jerusalem, 1897. “I hereby acknowledge receipt of two pounds which were sent to me by the honorable Gaon, Moreinu HaRav Shmuel Salant shlit”a, for the purpose of studying Mishnayos and reciting Kaddish until the Erev Pesach, for the merit of Eliezer ben Naftali HaLevi a”h; and I have signed below, Sunday, 14 Iyar 1897, here in the Holy City of Jerusalem, may it be rebuilt and established, HaKatan Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld.” Jerusalem, 1897. Mara D’Ara D’Yisrael Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld (1848–1932) – Rav of the Eidah HaChareidis and Agudas Yisrael in Jerusalem, among the leading figures of the previous generation. A disciple of Maran the Ksav Sofer of Pressburg and Rabbi Avraham Schag, he immigrated to Jerusalem and became a close associate of Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin. He later succeeded him, leading the Chareidi community in Eretz Yisrael, and served as president of the Diskin Orphanage, head of the Kollel Shomrei HaChomos, and chief administrator of the General Chevra Kadisha of Jerusalem.
