“1929 Riots Compensation Claim” Compensation claim filed by the father of Reb Dov Ber Lipin, one of the victims of the 1929 Hebron Massacre, 11 Elul 1929. Compensation claim submitted by the family of Reb Dov Getz Lipin, a student of the Hebron Yeshivah who was murdered during the 1929 Hebron Massacre. [1] leaf, printed Mandate Government form in Hebrew and English, completed in manuscript. In this rare document, the father of the holy Bachur, Dov Lipin of Vitebsk, HY”D, files a compensation claim for the murder of his son and for his personal belongings that were stolen and looted, including Tefillin, a suit, a raincoat, and other items. In the claim, the father writes: “Mr. Dov Getz Lipin was killed on Shabbos, the 18th of Menachem Av of this year, in the home of Eliezer Dan Slonim, by murderous Arabs. Since, according to the law of Eretz Yisrael, I am entitled to claim compensation for loss of life, I hereby request payment of the aforementioned sum as compensation for the life of my son.” HaKadosh Reb Dov Ber ben Rabbi Chaim Lipman Lipin (1904–1929) was born in Vitebsk, Russia. He studied in Tula at a branch of the Kelm Yeshivah under the Geonim Rabbi Yaakov Katz and Rabbi Reuven Dessler, and later at the main Kelm Yeshivah in Homel, where he grew in Torah and Yiras Shamayim. In 1920, he studied at the Yeshivah of the Chafetz Chaim in Snovsk. After a year, he entered the Slabodka Yeshivah in Lithuania, where he devoted himself to Torah study for five years. He survived pogroms on two occasions, in Yekaterinoslav and Kyiv. In 1926, he immigrated to Eretz Yisrael and studied at the Slabodka Yeshivah in the holy city of Hebron. On Shabbos, 18 Av 1929, an enraged Arab mob attacked the Jewish community of Hebron and carried out a massacre of the city's Jews. A large group of Jews and Yeshivah students took refuge in the home of Eliezer Dan Slonim. Hundreds of bloodthirsty rioters gathered around the house seeking to break in, while the Yeshivah students stood at the doors as a human barricade. Reb Dov Lipin was among those defending the entrance until the door was smashed open with axes. He managed to warn those inside, crying out: “Scatter and hide in the rooms, for danger has entered the house!” Reb Dov Ber was murdered by the rioters at the entrance to the house at the age of twenty-six and was buried in the mass grave in the holy city of Hebron. Approximately three and a half weeks after his murder, on 11 Elul 1929, his father filed the present compensation claim. Memorial accounts in his honor appear in Sefer HaZikaron L'Kedoshei Av 5689, Yizkor L'Kedoshei Yeshivas Chevron, and Sefer Vitebsk.
