HaGaon Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank (1873–1961) — Rav of Jerusalem and author of the responsa “Har Tzvi, ” among the foremost Poskim who arose for the Jewish people in recent generations, a wondrous genius to whom all the secrets of Torah and the approaches of the Rishonim and Acharonim were revealed, an extraordinary diligent scholar, and alongside all this a compassionate father to every poor and needy person, an energetic activist for every matter of holiness, and a fearless fighter in defense of the sanctities of Israel and preservation of religion. Many of these struggles took place during the early years of the State: he fought against the drafting of girls and national service, autopsies, the question of “Who is a Jew, ” Sabbath observance in dairies and kibbutzim, and worked toward establishing the institution of the rabbinate, preserving Jewish education, Kashrus, Shemittah, Shechitah, and many other matters. He stood at the head of the Orthodox communities in Hungary. He ascended to Eretz Yisrael shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, reestablished the Pressburg Yeshiva in Jerusalem, and was appointed a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah.
