Sefer Likutei Moharan – First Edition! Ostroh, 1808 – printed during the lifetime of the author by his disciple Moharnat – Segulah Sefer The Sefer of Sefarim and Kodesh HaKodoshim of Breslov! The holy Sefer Likutei Moharan, by Harav HaKadosh Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, is the foundational Sefer of the Torah of Breslov Chassidus and one of the most influential Sefarim in the world of Chassidus until today. Before us is the first edition, in which the first part of the composition was printed. This Sefer is the only Sefer from the teachings of Rabbi Nachman printed during his lifetime. (After the passing of Moharan, his disciple Rabbi Nosson printed an additional section, “Likutei Moharan Tinyana, ” containing what his Rebbe innovated and revealed from 1808 until his passing in 1810.) Moharan, author of the Sefer, spoke about the great importance of acquiring this Sefer: “And he said that every person must endeavor to purchase his Sefer, and one who has nothing with which to buy it, etc., should sell the pillow beneath his head and purchase his Sefer… ” (Chayei Moharan, 349), “And he said that his Sefer would become very important, and people would seek it and search greatly for it, and it would be printed and reprinted many times, and it would become very important…” (ibid.). In addition, “And he said that one must endeavor greatly to purchase his Sefarim, for even when they stand in a chest and tower they are a great benefit, for his Sefarim are a great protection in the home, guarding also a person’s wealth and money from all damages ” (Chayei Moharan, 355), and he actively encouraged wealthy individuals to purchase his Sefer so that their wealth would be preserved, as related there (ibid.): “And he mentioned a certain wealthy man whom he knew and recognized, and said that it would also be a great benefit for him that my Sefer be in his house, for it would be a great protection for everything and his wealth would endure.” The Sefer was written, edited, and brought to print by the foremost disciple of Rabbi Nachman — Harav HaKadosh Rabbi Nosson Sternhartz of Nemirov, who from the day he came to his Rebbe recorded in writing everything that emerged from His Holy Mouth. It is related that when Rabbi Nosson was engaged in binding the manuscript of the composition, Rabbi Nachman said to him: “This matter with which they are now occupied, binding the Sefer, appears to you to be insignificant, but in truth many worlds depend upon it, upon the binding of this Sefer .” Rabbi Nachman expressed himself and said that the printing of the Sefer and learning from it is the “Aschalta DeGeulah” (Chayei Moharan, 346). He greatly praised his Sefer, and said that “one can become a person of great intellect through his Sefer, for it contains great and profound intellect, wondrously deep…, ” and that “one can become a complete Baal Teshuvah through studying his Sefer…” (Chayei Moharan, 347, 349). To his disciple Harav HaKadosh Reb Nosson he said: “Little do you know of the immense greatness and holiness of the Sefer, and even more than this it is fitting for you to believe in the immense greatness of the Sefer” (Chayei Moharan, 369). On the rear endpaper is an additional ownership inscription: ”הרב הגאון הגדול מופ”ה בוצינא קדישא חסידא ופרישא מו”ה אברהם ליב הכהן נ”י... ” Possibly referring to the author of “Kol Aryeh.” On the title page is the signature: ”בעד שני רובל כסף - מאיר ארי' ליבוש סגל” Ownership inscription of “Rabbi Yitzchak Gavriel.” On the front endpaper are inscriptions of: ”הרבני מוהר”ר איציק גבריאל מבראד בן הרבני הנגיד מו”ה נתן פאצאק מבראד וכעת שייך להרבני המופלא החריף הנגיד המפואר המושלם כש”ת מ' מאיר ליבוש נ”י מלבוב” [1], 160 [should read: 162] leaves. Incorrect foliation. The title page underwent professional margin restoration and adjustment to the format of the Sefer; new leather binding.
