Letter of agreement written and signed between the Rabbanim of Tiberias and Rabbi David Asodri, in which they “grant the Mitzvah mission in all the cities of Egypt and Alexandria, villages and major cities, to the honorable Rav, Rabbi David Asodri, to conduct there his emissary mission after the completion of the mission of the Rav Rabbi Shmuel ben Kiki… and he shall take from there all the vows and donations… and his compensation from what he collects in the aforementioned cities… all shall be as granted to the honorable Rabbanim Rabbi Yosef ben Skali and Rabbi Shmuel ben Kiki, as written in their agreements.” Tiberias, 1892. On one side: in semi-cursive handwriting, bearing the signatures of the Rabbanim of Tiberias: Rabbi Yosef David Abulafia (the second), Rabbi Yitzchak Abulafia, Rabbi David Yaakov Vaknin, and Rabbi Yaakov HaKohen Skali, with the stamp-form signature of Rabbi Avraham Abuchatzira, and with the stamp of Rabbi Shlomo Rachamim Abulafia. The emissary Rabbi David Asodri (passed away in 1904) — born in Meknes, Morocco, and ascended to Tiberias with his father in 1845, while still a child. In 1857 he was among the founders of the Yeshiva “Beis Yaakov” in Tiberias and among its earliest students. From his youth he was sent as emissary of Tiberias to Yemen (in 1877, where he installed iron charity boxes in synagogue walls for the benefit of “Tzedakas Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes”), to Morocco (in 1885), and to India (1890, where he wrote an approbation on a Sefer Tehillim with Arabic translation). Thereafter, he was sent as an emissary of Tiberias to North Africa, and as an emissary of Safed to Bukhara. His sons-in-law were Rabbi Yehoshua Birdogo, Av Beis Din of Meknes, and Rabbi Eliyahu Yeluz, emissary and Av Beis Din in Tiberias. Rabbi Yosef David Abulafia (the second, Mahari”da) (passed away in 1898) — served as Rav in Damascus, and from 1883 was the chief Rav of Tiberias and the first there to bear the title “Chacham Bashi.” Son of Rabbi Yissachar, son of Rabbi Chaim Abulafia. Rabbi Yitzchak Abulafia (the third) (passed away in 1899) — among the sages of Tiberias. Son of the Rishon LeTzion Rabbi Chaim Nissim Abulafia — Chn”a. Rabbi Shlomo Rachamim Abulafia (passed away in 1907) — also a son of Rabbi Chn”a. He became blind in his youth, yet continued his diligence and became one of the leading sages of Tiberias. Because of his blindness, he affixed his stamp to the document rather than signing it. Rabbi David ben Yaakov Vaknin (ca. 1836–1897) — ascended to Tiberias in 1871 and served there as Rav, author of the Sefarim “Yalkut David” and “VaYedaber David.” Rabbi Avraham Abuchatzira (1841–1913) — third son of Maran Rabbi Yaakov Abuchatzira. Dayan in Tafilalt and Tiberias, Gaon and Mekubal, who occupied himself with publishing the writings of his father. Ascended to Eretz Yisrael in 1872. Rabbi Yaakov HaKohen Skali (1838–1918) — among the leading sages of Tiberias, went out several times as an emissary of Tiberias. Appointed Dayan in 1890 and later appointed Raavad. On the reverse side: document granting the emissary rights from Rabbi David Asodri to the sage Rabbi Shlomo ben Samun, in his handwriting and signature, from 1901. With confirmation thereof bearing the signatures of five Rabbanim of Tiberias, headed by the great Rav Rabbi Aharon Elhadif, Av Beis Din of Tiberias, and Rabbi Shmuel ben Kiki. With two stamps of the “Vaad HaKlali HaChadash” in the holy city of Tiberias, and an additional stamp. The chief Rav and Chacham Bashi of the city, Rabbi Aharon Elhadif (the third) (1835–1909) — known as Ab”a [Aharon Bechor Elhadif], son of Rabbi Chaim Elhadif. Among the members of the Yeshiva “Beis Yaakov” in 1857. Son-in-law of the Gaon and Mekubal Rabbi Yaakov Shealtiel Ninyo. Served as Rav in the holy city of Safed, and in 1898 was appointed Rav and Chacham Bashi in place of Rabbi Yosef David Abulafia. Rabbi Shmuel ben Kiki (1842–1919) — among the sages of Tiberias. Member of the Beis Din of the Raavad of Tiberias, HaGaon Rabbi Yaakov HaKohen Skali, and his successor. Born in the city of Rabat, Morocco, to his father, HaGaon Rabbi David ben Kiki, who was among the leaders of the community. He ascended with his father in childhood to Eretz Yisrael. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Yosef David Abulafia. He left behind many manuscript compositions and an entire Sefer of Piyutim. His Sefer “Ma’arachos Shmuel” was published in 1994.
