HaGaon Rabbi Sheftel HaLevi Horowitz (1592–1660) — among the leading sages of his generation, Rosh Yeshiva, Darshan of the Prague community, and Rav of the communities of Fürth, Frankfurt, Poznań, and Vienna. Son of the Shelah HaKadosh and editor of his Sefer Shnei Luchos HaBris. Disciple of his father and of Rabbi Shlomo Ephraim of Luntschitz. Author of the Sefer Vavei HaAmudim. HaGaon HaMekubal, the renowned Rabbi Naftali Katz , author of Semichas Chachamim (1649–1719) — among the foremost Mekubalim of Ashkenazic land. Av Beis Din of Ostroh, Poznań, and Frankfurt am Main. From his youth he was known for his awe-inspiring holiness and extraordinary diligence, until he mastered the entire Talmud by heart. Shortly after his marriage he was appointed Rosh Yeshiva of Ostroh, and while still about thirty years old became Rav of the important city of Ostroh and the entire region of Ukraine. In 1689 he became Rav of Poznań. At that time, while only about forty years old, he was appointed head and leader of the Council of the Four Lands, the supreme Torah authority throughout Ashkenazic and Polish Jewry. In 1704 he was appointed Rav of Frankfurt am Main, then the foremost center of Torah study in Germany. Following the great fire in Frankfurt am Main in 1711, he was forced to flee the city due to accusations that the fire had resulted from his involvement in Practical Kabbalah, invocations, and the writing of amulets. After various wanderings, he set out for Eretz Yisrael, but upon reaching Constantinople he fell ill and passed away there. His grave in Constantinople remains to this day a place of prayer and salvation visited by people from around the world. Without binding. Damaged spine causing the volume to separate into gatherings.
